This past weekend, I began preparations for my Thanksgiving holiday table. There will be our regular tradition of mimosas in the morning, and our fried turkey will be served up with white wine. But at many homes across our nation, the focus won't be on the feast laid before them. The website About Alcohol Abuse reports that nearly 53% of American adults know someone that struggles with drinking related problems.
In many of those cases, alcohol is blamed for destroying the holiday celebration. There are other considerations outside of creating a holiday that would rather be forgotten. Many of those issues, such as liver damage, cause long-lasting ramifications. Consuming alcohol over long periods of time can also cause brain damage. The possibility of alcohol poisoning that can result in death is a very real concern.
Outside of the health issues related to alcohol abuse, there are also social affects. Employees that abuse alcohol have been shown to have a higher rate of absenteeism and show poor job performance when they are in the workplace. Statistics related to homicides and serious assaults have also shown that either the perpetrator or the victim in nearly half the cases had consumed alcohol.
Teen drinking is probably the most concerning of issues related to alcohol abuse. Binge drinking among high school students is a real concern for anyone with a teenager in their household. One survey among former dropouts presently between the ages of 18-24, showed that almost 60% of them started drinking prior to the age of 16. The spring season which ushers in proms and graduations, also shows an increase in alcohol-related deaths among teenagers.
Alcohol is legal but its use should still be closely monitored. There are some positive medicinal effects attributed to alcohol consumption. For example, drinking a glass of red wine a day has been shown to give positive results in the improvement of cholesterol levels. It is also linked to lowering the risk of stroke.
The key to obtaining positive effects from alcohol is held in moderation. Unfortunately, our society glamorizes the use of alcohol in movies and media. As with any choice we make as individuals, it is up to us to monitor and ensure that we aren't abusing the use of alcohol and bringing ill upon ourselves.
Being aware of the negative and the positive effects of alcohol is important as you enter the holiday season. Celebrations and spirits often go hand-in-hand. Keep in mind, however, that if a loved one or friend is struggling with the abuse of alcohol, the best gift you can give them is help with their problem. Talk to them openly about considering help from a treatment facility. Milestones Ranch Malibu is well-equipped to assist your loved one battling the issue of alcohol abuse.
