When someone is suffering with an addiction to alcohol, it is not easy for them to talk to just anyone about their feelings. Getting alcohol individual counseling from someone trained to help people get sober and stay sober is important. Many alcoholics have feelings of guilt and shame that can cause them to be depressed. While they may recognize a need for change, they do not always know how to deal with the struggles they face.
The Professionals
A professional has the experience and training needed to guide individuals through recovery. They do not judge and have a genuine desire to help their clients succeed. A counselor will listen to the individual without disapproving. With a number of options available to the person who is ready to get help, a counselor will help find the one that will work best.
The Evaluation
Substance abuse counselors complete comprehensive evaluations with each individual who is looking for help. Getting to know the person and their personal and family history, as well as medical and relationship issues, is important for the counselor. This information and knowing what prompted them to come in for help will make it possible for the counselor to develop a treatment plan.
The Plan
The trained professional will develop a case plan based on the information gathered during the assessment. Because there are a number of approaches the professional can use, it is important to gather as much information about the client as possible. With any type of addiction there are issues that will need to be identified and addressed so that the individual can overcome the addiction.
Confidentiality
To help the client feel comfortable and trusting, the counselor holds to the strictest confidentiality rules. Every person must feel confident that what they say in a session stays between them and the professional. Confidentiality is the key to developing a trusted relationship between client and counselor. If a person does not feel safe they will not successfully deal with their issues.
The Root Of The Problem
A good counselor will be able to help the person not only get sober but learn to appropriately cope with the problems that drinking to excess has caused. The professional will assist the alcoholic to take control of their life and learn to live without alcohol. Following the goals and objectives that were set up before counseling began, the individual will gain confidence as they see their progress.
The Decision
It is important to be sure to contact a skilled alcohol group counseling counselor as soon as you are ready for help. The decision to make certain changes in your daily life to get sober is just the first step in the process. When you understand what triggers drinking, the counselor will be able to teach alternative and appropriate skills for coping that will help prevent a relapse.
Remember that a trained professional has experience in providing alcohol addiction counseling. Based on each individual’s assessment, the counselor will develop a alcohol rehabilitation plan that will work best.

Work was starting to be too hectic for a young police officer named Gary. Although he had only been on the police force for two-and-a-half years, he was already known as a hard worker who rarely turned down working overtime. As a matter of fact, he was now working twenty to twenty-five hours of overtime each week and, as a result, he felt like he was losing his handle on his personal life. What made the situation more complicated, however, was the fact that Gary started going out drinking with a gang of fellow officers after work.
What Began as a Good Time Soon Turned Into Hazardous and Irresponsible Drinking
What began as fun soon turned into careless and hazardous drinking and then into a negative cycle of feeling tired every morning when he got up for work, working more long hours, and then going drinking with his buddies after work.
Noticeably Gary was in a health related and psychological rut and going through some adverse alcohol effects on the body. Where Gary really observed alcohol related problems and alcohol short term effects, on the other hand, was in his family life and in his marriage. His wife wasn’t really a nag, but she regularly encouraged him to stay at home more with her and with the kids instead of going out and wasting money while drinking with his buddies.
Gary’s Careless Drinking Negatively Affects His Personality
In a similar manner, Gary’s irresponsible and excessive drinking also adversely affected his personality. More precisely, the more abusively he drank, the less patience he had with any difficulties or issues that arose regarding his children or his wife.
It Was Apparent to Gary That His Hazardous and Abusive Drinking Was Adversely Affecting His Relationship With His Family, Work, Pocketbook, and His Health
In his heart of hearts, it was clear to Gary that his irresponsible and careless drinking was adversely affecting his pocketbook, health, work, and his relationship with his family. So one Tuesday morning Gary made up his mind to talk to Jerry, a trusted old police officer buddy that he greatly admired.
Gary told Jerry how irresponsible and careless drinking was negatively affecting his pocketbook, relationship with his family, work, and his health. Jerry mentioned to Gary that he really understood because roughly fourteen years ago, he too got involved in careless and irresponsible drinking. In fact, Jerry told Gary that careless and excessive drinking can create so many problems in a person’s life that virtually everything of importance can be destroyed. And lastly, Jerry suggested that Gary make an appointment with an alcohol psychologist at the work-affiliated alcohol and drug abuse rehabilitation facility.
Since his employee’s assistance program was affiliated with this treatment clinic, it was not only very affordable but also quite convenient to seek rehab about his careless and hazardous drinking. And since the personnel at the chemical dependency rehab clinic was supportive, non-judgmental, and competent, Gary would be able to get alcohol treatment that made sense to him and something he could follow through on.
After Alcohol Detoxification and Alcohol Treatment Gary Was Eventually Able To Quit Drinking and Stop Working Overtime
After talking to his counselor about how his drinking was ruining his work, health, relationship with his family, and his pocketbook, Gary understood that he was burning the candle at both ends with his crazy work hours and his abusive and careless drinking. Once he realized that he was digging himself into a rut, after detoxification and with the help of his doctor, and after four months in therapy, he was at last able to quit drinking and stop working overtime.
Due to His Alcohol Rehabilitation Gary Felt Better and More Healthy
The result was that Gary viewed life differently now that he was in alcohol recovery. Stated briefly, due to his alcohol rehabilitation he not only was more patient when interacting with his wife and his children, but he actually had more money now even though he was working far fewer hours each week, he had more quality time to spend with his family, and he felt better and more healthy. Paradoxically, now that he quit drinking, Gary and his wife were not only beginning to save some money for a different house but he also felt more energized and alert than anytime since he and his wife were married.

Diane drank to an excess on a regular basis with her friends. One Monday after all of her classes were finished, she began thinking about the amount of alcohol she consumed and the abusive and irresponsible drinking of her drinking pals. As a consequence of this, she courteously asked all of her drinking pals the following question: “what do we really know about binge drinking, alcohol abuse, alcohol poisoning, and alcoholism? Stated another way, how much alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse information do we really know? For our young age, we certainly drink in an abusive and excessive manner and I am starting to wonder if we are headed for a life filled with alcohol-related problems when we become adults.
I think we need to go on the web and find out all that is feasible about alcoholism, binge drinking, alcohol abuse, and alcohol poisoning. And then if we have any nagging issues that we can’t comprehend after we complete our web research, we can walk to the student health center at the college and ask Nurse Soltes to help us understand what we don’t know.â€
It Shouldn’t Come as a Big Surprise That What Diane Mentioned Would Start a Heated Discussion
It shouldn’t come as a big shock that what Diane discussed would trigger a heated discussion. For example, her best friend since the eighth grade, Leila, stated that they are too young and too healthy to be concerned about excessive and hazardous drinking. Another drinking pal named Jay rationalized that since most high school students drink there’s no commonsensical reason why they should be any different. Another friend named Kaylen stated that all she wants to do is to have fun drinking with her buddies. And still another friend named Alfredo actually agreed with Diane primarily because both of his parents abused alcohol and both of his parents had a history of alcohol related problems.
Diane revealed to her pals that she comprehended everything that they had said but that engaging in hazardous drinking at such a vulnerable age in reality can’t be very healthy or something that contributes toward developing a meaningful life. When two or three of her drinking pals asked what kind of alcohol issues Diane was talking about, Diane articulated the following: alcohol-related diseases such as cirrhosis of the liver, heart disease, and cancer, and other alcohol-related problems like alcoholism, alcohol-related traffic accidents and fatalities, and alcohol poisoning (which can be fatal in some instances).
Irresponsible and Excessive Drinking Regularly Results in Drinking Problems
When Diane then stated that abusive and excessive drinking regularly results in relationship, legal, financial, and school problems, some of her drinking friends finally began to understand how far reaching and how debilitating irresponsible drinking can be. Indeed, some of her drinking friends became more “open†and started to disclose how these alcohol addiction and alcohol abuse effects had adversely affected their parents and some of their friends.
After under scoring some of the alcoholism and alcohol abuse problems that are related to unhealthy and excessive drinking, the vast majority of her drinking friends liked the idea about getting information online. They were, however, cautious about discussing their drinking situations with staff at school. As Diane heard this she thought to herself, “at least they want to learn more about their unhealthy drinking. This is a fantastic start.â€
