You and Your Anger: How to Control It
No one should be telling you what you should be feeling or what you should be doing for that matter. Same can be said when talking about anger. You are basically responsible for what your actions will be when you are angry. No one should be instucting you how to feel, think, act or react for that matter. The only problem about anger is that most of us do not really have an idea as to what it is, and it is this lack of understanding that contributes to our failure when it comes to constructive expression of the emotion.
Before looking for any anger management programs or techniques it is important that you understand what anger really is first. Here’s a question for you; in your own words, what is anger really? To what do you most likely associate it to? Do you associate anger with swearing, yelling, arguments, conflict, destruction and hostility? Chances are you answered the first question with an “I don’t knowâ€, and the second question with a yes.
Regardless of the fact whether you answered the first question or not, if you answered the second question with a yes, you’d be wrong. Anger is not anything like what was mentioned above. Why? Yes anger is able to awaken feelings of hostility, rage and aggresion, but with proper control these destructive emotions can be used to achieve constructive ends. So you see, anger is different for each of us, some are able to pull off what was mentioned above easily, while some have difficulty, and some, well, its present they don’t use it, rational thinking that is.
So how do you control your anger? The simple answer would be, properly, through control and management. If you are having trouble managing your anger, there are many anger management techniques that you can choose from. Ranging from the simplest to the most complicated and advanced ones, and it is up to you to judge and decide which method would work for you best. But understand that these anger management techniques are only for the purpose of bringing you back into a more rational state and not to stop or stem your anger in any way.
If you observe that you are often stopping your emotions when practicing anger management techniques, then most probably either you are doing something wrong or the technique you have chosen to use does not fit the particular situation that you are using it for.
