From the author: Co-occurring psychiatric and substance abuse disorders present unique challenges for vocational rehabilitation service provision. Employment however, has been an indicant of successful recovery efforts which enhance quality of life outcomes and diminish the likelihood for recidivism into the system. Historical difficulties in achieving successful outcomes for persons who experience severe mental illness and the high correlation between severe mental illness and substance dependence or abuse require further examination. This descriptive study discusses the prevalence of persons who are dually-diagnosed in the vocational rehabilitation system and "recovery related" characteristics which might impact employment outcomes. Overall, there were no significant differences among those consumers who were employed versus those who were unemployed across "recovery related" variables. This presents a departure from the literature and implications will be discussed.
